Two ideas.
- We are all always doing our best in that specific moment.
- Examining how we react to intersectionality reveals our biases.
One
Think about LeBron James in the 2016 NBA Finals. He’s in the process of leading his team back from a 3-1 deficit to win Cleveland’s first championship in a big-3 pro sport in 54 years. Even as he led both teams in all five major statists, he could have made more shots. He could have missed fewer free throws. Despite being possibly the best player in the NBA in that moment, and maybe ever, he could have played better, even in ways that were purely under control.
Two
We know there is tremendous bias against Black Americans in the criminal justice system.
We also know that convictions [especially on charges on par with the assault] in sexual assault cases are exceedingly rare relative to the occurrence of such assaults.
So… Do we “believe women” when a white woman accuses a Black man of assault? Are we doing a disservice to the victim if the investigation proceeds with extreme caution, knowing the damage “white woman tears” have done historically?
In the caricature that is our current political climate, there are multiple polar variances that could be seen, based on political leanings and self identity.
